In the autumn, when the farmers return from the mountain pastures with their cattle, cattle shows are held in Appenzell Ausserrhoden. The most beautiful and best-performing cows win awards.

The opening, when the farmers walk through a richly decorated wooden arch, is one of the most fascinating moments of the show. The cows are tied to slats according to the respective categories they compete in. The jury, made up of experienced farmers, evaluates the beauty and performance of the animals and then arranges them according to their ranking. The most beautiful animals are decorated with a wreath made of paper flowers. Many shows also include a section for goats raised by younger breeders.

The evening winds up in a local inn with an awards ceremony and laudatory speeches. Afterwards, rustic celebrations with singing, yodelling and dancing ensue.
