Senntum carving

ALL THE INFORMATION ABOUT CARVING IN THE SEVENTIES

In the 20th century the Appenzeller and Toggenburger Sentumsschnitzerei, also called Chüeli-Schnitzerei, developed. Initially it consisted almost exclusively of alpine rides. Other motifs from local customs, such as New Year's Eve hares or the Bloch, were added later. What was initially a winter pastime quickly developed into a lucrative sideline business. The carvings are popular collectors' items.

First, the shape of the figure is pre-sawed and then carved with a knife. Finally, the figures, which can be up to 15 centimetres tall, are painted.
