Appenzell Railways Museum
Vintage trains, everyday railway objects and temporary displays of historical documents.
This museum houses the vintage collection of trains belonging to the Appenzell Historical Trains Trust. These include the only Swiss narrowgauge diesel/electric locomotive in pristine 1929 condition.
In addition to the trains, the museum has numerous objects on display which allow an insight into the day-to-day life of the railway and its workers. Temporary exhibitions of documents relating to the long history of the Appenzeller Railways round off the museum's portfolio. The current exhibition looks at the once-planned route from Appenzell to Wasserauen – Seealpsee – Meglisalp (in the Säntis range) and also presents documents relating to the early locomotives and wagons, which were often pioneering achievements in their day.
The museum is housed in the historical depot of the old Säntis railway in Wasserauen and is open from 11am to 5pm at weekends from April to mid-October (excluding bank holidays).
