The Appenzellerland for culture vultures – 12 hours

1. HIKE ON THE PEACE PATH (3 HRS 30 MINS)

From Walzenhausen, walk along the Peace Path to Heiden via Wolfhalden (green line on the overview map). Along the way you’ll find ten peace stations dedicated to people who selflessly and courageously helped people in great need. Engage with their life stories and learn more about their connection to the Appenzeller Vorderland.

2. COFFEE AND CAKE (1 HR)

Upon arriving in Heiden, stop for a little something at a café or restaurant. Enjoy a lovely coffee and indulge in a piece of cake or other baked treats.

3. HENRY DUNANT IN HEIDEN VILLAGE (3 HRS)

Then visit the Henry Dunant Museum (red dot on the overview map) and learn even more about the life and work of the father of the International Red Cross.

He spent his last 18 years in Heiden and even wrote his memoirs here. The museum dedicated to him is housed in the building where he lived as a reclusive pensioner until his death on 30 October 1910.

4. ROLL THE FILM (2 HRS)

Before you leave, attend a screening at the ornate cinema.

The Rosental cinema in Heiden (blue dot on the overview map) is one of the last few in eastern Switzerland to have survived from the golden age of movie theatres.

5. HISTORICAL RIDE ON APPENZELL RAILWAYS (30 MINS)

End your day in Heiden and take the nostalgic rack railway to Rorschach (red line on the overview map).
