DETAILED INFORMATION ON FUNKENSONNTAG AND GIDIO HOSESTOSS CARNIVAL
Gidio Hosestoss – a fascinating carnival tradition in Herisau and Waldstatt!
On Ash Wednesday, Gidio Hosestoss, who choked to death miserably on a stolen sweet, is laid out on an open carriage and a funeral procession in carnival guise ensues. The grieving bereaved, among them his mother, Eulalia Fadehäx, née Chuefödle, with their enormous mask heads, sit on small carts wiping their eyes. Other floats often depict events from the past year. Two older pupils take on the role of priest and sacristan and hold a humorous sermon satirising school events and village affairs.
On Ash Wednesday night, the people of Herisau meet for the Guggen monster concert and enjoy the feast of Beizenfasnacht. Lovingly decorated bars, verse-reciting Schnitzelbank groups and Guggen music ensure an eventful night with entertainment for everyone.
The Herisau Fasnacht carnival ends on the Sunday after Ash Wednesday (Funkensonntag), with the burning of the Gidio Hosestoss effigy on the Ebnet site.
