The history of the dulcimer goes back a long way. Originally, the dulcimer came from Persia. It has been known there as an important classical instrument since the early Middle Ages. It was first mentioned in Switzerland in 1447 in a Zurich council book. At first it was played at royal courts and later devalued and rather despised as a dance instrument. In the Appenzell region and in Toggenburg, however, it has been preserved until today. The dulcimer is mainly used in folk music.
