On the way from Schönengrund to Schwellbrunner Sitz and back, hikers will really feel the winter. Here, 900 to 1,000 metres above sea level, it snows more frequently than elsewhere in the Appenzellerland, and with the cold air tending to get locked in in the valley, it stays white longer, too. Whether on narrow cross-country skis, downhill skis or snowshoes, there are plenty of options for winter sports enthusiasts in this region.
