Tour of the Appenzell foreland
Starting point for this tour is Walzenhausen, the “balcony above Lake Constance”. Enjoy the unique views across Lake Constance and deep into Germany. Walzenhausen can be reached from Rheineck with the idyllic Appenzeller Bahnen mountain train. From Walzenhausen, the tour leads up to St. Anton mountain via Oberegg. Here the vistas extend over the entire Appenzellerland and into the Rhine Valley. You will then continue on via the “Suruggen” range of hills towards Trogen. From the Suruggen you can enjoy wonderful views across the typical Appenzell hills. In Trogen, the cantonal assembly square with the Baroque Grubenmann church and the visitor centre of the Pestalozzi Children’s Village are both worth a visit. After a rapid descent to the Goldach valley, the next climb leads to Wald. In Wald there are yet more fantastic views to take in, with the entire Alpstein massif towering in front of you. The trail then continues on via Kaien to Heiden.
Explore the Biedermeier village, including a visit to the Henry Dunant Museum, before heading back to Walzenhausen.
